Most people book on carriers that are based in their own country, and China is no exception. If you want to see an example of the reverse in action, look at Air China's reputation on these threads.
For everyone one who is being rebooked at PVG: I really don't understand why UA is being so stubborn and annoying. UA partners ANA and Asians both fly to their respective hubs from HGH, and Air China had a focus city at the airport.
