The trick is that they suck
because they are sort of spring-loaded, probably to help close them, if you are the first person putting a bag into a particular bin (or the last person to remove a bag upon deplaning) it's surprisingly hard to get a bag into the bin without someone else helping. You have to use one hand to hold the bin down and then try to wrangle your bag with only one free hand.
I wrote in a complaint form and received a phone call response for what it's worth. Maybe if they get enough of these they'll do something on the next round of mods...
