CNS-SYD-HKG-SFO & CNS-HKG-SFO

At SYD the domestic to international transfer is best avoided. International and Domestic terminals are opposite and across Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport, 4km / 2.5 miles away.
You are unlikely to be on 1 ticket. QF will not transfer checked luggage on separate tickets, so you will need to make your own way to T1. VA will be no better.

I happily pay good money to avoid SYD transits
Firstly to the OP I'd just take the direct. I flew HKG-BNE on the a330 and the product is fine - 777 just a tiny bit bigger? Not worth it.

Re. SYD transit - arriving QF has access to QF bus transfer I believe? Price is ridiculous for a 2 minute transfer but the train domestic<->international is pretty easy. Again with all that being said I wouldn't bother for the difference between a330 and 777. If it was a J vs F discussion then yes.
