I'm glad you found the official rules, though it wouldn't surprise me if an agent said "we're not Aeroplan" if you ever pulled them out at an airport.
In YYC, you can do this stuff at check-in, customer service, MLL, or the gate.
HUCA can be necessary IRL too.
