On the return-trip however... oh boy.
The staff at HND and NRT are some of fussiest I have encountered, and I use these airports frequently.
The lady at check-in gave me a long berating about the carry-on rules, and how the sweater under my arm counted as a second carry-on item. I simply put it in my computer bag, and the problem was solved.
Still, it was very hard not to laugh at the situation.
