Not sure I'd label it "deterioration" when a gift shop no longer sells newspapers; perhaps there is a limited supply of free papers at the elevator lobbies? (USA Today will practically give them away to hotels to pad circulation numbers.)

It's kind of like saying the auto parts stores have deteriorated because they no longer sell buggy whips.
