I'm mostly a Hilton person, but I had a stay here in mid-May, as part of an event. I'm on the event planning team, so bear that in mind while reading this. Some properties go overboard with trying to please those putting on the event, while others do nothing extra. The Gaylord was mostly in the first category.
I arrived around 1pm on a Saturday...our event started at 6. I like to be onsite a few hours early to make sure everything looks ok. There's an enormous parking garage just the other side of a huge construction project (another wing of the hotel). It probably took 10 min just to walk from the car inside.
My room wasn't yet ready, but I left them my phone number and they said that they'd call.
Next I found my way to our event venue, a ballroom in the very back. As someone else mentioned, you walk through this huge atrium, where there are fountains, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. Our space was on the 3rd floor, and one of the escalators was under repair. It didn't seem like anyone else had any meetings nearby ours (always a good thing). I went into the ballroom, and they were still setting up. Our A/V guys were working with the hotel folks on lighting and there was a scissor lift on the floor (not a good sign). The tables were all out, they had to move our A/V table from one side of the room to the other which impacted our table numbers, but I found an easy solution.
Met with another planner and went with her to lunch.
After that, I went to the front desk to check on my room, and it was ready (so much for them calling).
As I mentioned earlier, some properties go all-in for those planning events, and the Gaylord certainly did. I was upgraded to a king suite. View was to the outside. I had just enough time to touch up some things with the iron before heading back to our event. While doing that someone brought a nice amenity...a bucket with different beers, and some sort of food (I forgot to take a picture). Unfortunately this was lost on me...I rarely drink, and definitely not before an event. This year I've had one drink after the event, and I did that in a lobby bar. So the whole spread was still there untouched when I left.
The event itself was great--everyone loved the location. We had people coming mostly from the DFW area and many commented how it was good to not have to go to the, "other," side of town. As part of our event we had casino-style games, and the hotel provided draping to separate that from the side of the ballroom where we ate.
By the time I got back to the ballroom, the elevator repair was cleaned up, the ballroom was ready (lift gone), and all of the hotel employees looked fresh and polished. They did a great job for us at the event.
After the event, my manager asked me, "Would this property work well for a national event?" I guess in the past they considered this and other Gaylord properties, but didn't quite get 5* service. It was definitely good, but I'm not quite sure it was great.
The hotel room was very well insulated. It stormed overnight and I hardly heard a thing.
As someone else noted, the gym was also fantastic. There must have been 30+ treadmills, plus all kinds of weights...more than what I have at my 24 Hour Fitness. The treadmill I used had a screen that defaulted to walking/running on a trail. Made me even forget where I was. I went around 7:30 on Sunday morning and I think there were just 1-2 others there. The pools were included in our package, but I didn't stay long enough to enjoy.
As I left I asked about parking, which we cover on our master account. The desk gal insisted it was $15 extra. After going back and forth I finally gave in and gave her my card, just so I could move on. But we always cover parking as part of our events (some properties cover for us, but regardless it is something individuals don't have to deal with), so between the no calling when room ready and this, the front desk needs some help.
I'll attach some pictures I took...
