Actually, I think this is incorrect. Credit card issuers CANNOT see line-item detail (ie, exactly what is purchased) from a specific merchant... usually. There is a distinction between level-2 data reporting and level-3 data reporting. MOST merchants do NOT report level-3 data, which is the data that includes item-by-item what is purchased. A very small subset (Staples is one I know of) of merchants report level-3 data to issuers.
So in most cases, your credit card issuer has no way to find out what exactly you are purchasing.
