I'd agree. If checking some luggage and basic carry-ons is all you have the CRJ900 is fine. It seems to just get included with the CRJ200 and such and the bane of a lot of member's existence. I choose not to fly them simply because I am not valet/gate checking my roller bag which contains my extensive camera gear for work. Thus I need mainline that will fit in overhead bin.

It's just fine though for your needs IMO. Take the straight flight!

Also connecting in ATL is fine though.
