Yep. Actually, I've found the MD-80 series to be less than optimal in handling turbulence, especially if you're in the back. Seems like they fishtail.

The pocket rocket would be my choice, and I'd want to sit up front, paying a few extra bucks for a little more room in comfort plus or whatever. Changing planes in Atlanta in the summer is a different kind of turbulence: a disturbance in your mind. Don't go there.

Two and a half hours in a pocket rocket is certainly bearable, and don't worry about the chop. They're not bad, and I don't think they're any worse than the MD-80's.
