Change Fees

I probably could find another complaining thread, but I am so angry I will just create my own. I booked a FC flight EWR-MCO from the 11th-19th of April. I winded up getting kidney stones, so I needed to push my flight out to the 23rd. That was a $600 change fee for 3 tickets. Then my son got very sick, and I needed to push my flight out again for another $600 change fee. Now we are ready to come home, and I am booking us on a flight for Sunday that will now charge me another $600 in change fees. All the while a one-way flight for each ticket is cheaper than the $200 change fees. Are charge fees just a revenue thing or does a real reason exists? Funny part leaving EWR on the 11th I got interviewed on TV about all of United issues, and I was very supportive of the airline. I know change fees are not just a United thing, but they are absurd.
