You should have tried flying Delta that day. I assume the ZRH flight eventually made it out but many others did not, including mine. Lines were 50 deep for rebooking and there were no options for many passengers for days. I was at the airport for 8 hours and got back home at 2am.
Two words - perspective.
My flight (AA64), once we found a captain, departed at 7:25 pm (instead of 5:55 pm). I seem to remember seeing sun at 6:45 pm and then the fog rolled in, yet when we got to the t/o runway we were #4 .
