Alright, lets look at Delta's use of the A330-200 and the order for the A330-900 NEO. Delta flies some of the longest scheduled A330-200s flights including SEA-HKG at 6,500 miles, DTW-PEK at 6,632 miles, and occasionally DTW-NRT at 6,397 miles and previously DTW-HND at 6,427 miles. The longest scheduled A330-200 flight is TK's PTY-IST flight at 6,728 miles. TK's A330-200s have a slightly lower density than DL's A330-200s. Airbus is designing the A330-900 NEO to have higher density than the A330-300, which is factored in Airbus's projected range for the aircraft. While we can speculate Delta's A330-900 NEOs will have fewer seats than the current A330-300 configuration, given the addition of W and the front section of the aircraft will likely be able to only seat 32 with the new D1 Suite, the issue of range won't be firmly established until Airbus has the A330-900 NEO certified and delivered. What is certain is that the aircraft will have plenty of range and be able to perform a wide variety of routes at a much lower cost than the 787-9.
