I pass through US pre-clearance at YVR 2-3x per month and experience none of the hyperbolic treatment you describe. A long transit time for me is 5 minutes. I get the sense from many that if a Nexus member can't transit immigration within a single minute, the system is a failure. And that it's the airport's fault. If other people (some with kids - gasp!) deign to use the same queues in the country's 2nd busiest airport, it deteriorates, for some, into an abject horrorshow.
Nexus membership has never pretended to exclude travellers from a CBP interview, although I've passed through several times with just a 'good morning....have a good day' exchange with the CBP official. If one finds simple questions such as "what's the purpose of your trip today?" as 'harassing garbage', it might be best to reevaluate the need to travel.
