Back in the day I did YYZ-YVR-SFO often, I remember always only one security lane open and after doing the luggage visual check, only one line for US CBP -- no kiosks, everyone had to talk to the officer .... always one officer handling transfers come to think of it ...

I think you're describing the airside transfer, which I believe now includes Nexus... it didn't when it first opened.
Come to think of it now, I can't tell if cow is talking airside or ground side, but both suck dried raccoon poop.
