FlightStats: Is relatively simple to use but only has a free version which is full of annoying ads making the interface difficult to navigate. They no longer offer a paid version to remove the ads. Simple things haven't been incorporated - like searching for flights brings up every codeshare. Moreover, the main screen doesn't show a real time summary of the flight - forcing you to look at the detailed screen to understand flight status.
FlightView: I have only tried the free version - the paid one is $3.99. It seems like this is the most viable replacement. They allow you to turn codeshares off, which is a nice feature. It doesn't offer the same information on the home screen but you can click through to "trip" to see a decent summary.
AppintheAir: This was recommended online in a detailed review that I found, but it's so much more cumbersome to use, is full of silly features that offer very little value and just add clutter. The basic version doesn't allow alerts, and unfortunately the paid version is prohibitively expensive ($50) to test drive. They also have the codeshare problem with a laundry list of flights across every alliance member.
Flight Tracker: This is just a very basic flight tracker that doesn't allow you to save a flight and monitor going forward. It's bare bones.
That's a quick review of what I have found - which is generally disappointing and not in any way a substitute. I'll probably use FlightView in the meantime and see how it works. Appintheair offers another alternative, but the "features" to me seem like mostly fluff and not worth $50. Hopefully someone builds a simple alternative that functions like FlightTrack - they could make decent money.
Others advise if there are others that function better?
I've also tried the free version of Flight+. Like you, I can't believe there isn't another app like FlightTrack Pro - I actually always assumed it was a pretty basic overall app and assumed there were others with much more features.
I'm up in the air for Flight+ and FlightView, I may buy them each (only $4 each) and give them a go for my upcomming trip this Friday and see if any is better. I'm slightly leaning more towards flight+, with additional information from flightradar and flightstats as needed (plane reg, and scheduled vs estimated departures/arrivals).
