Try flying to Jakarta (CGK) then redeeming a flight to MEL. That could get you close to $5K in J but it will take longer and burn some of your points on the CGK-MEL flight.
I acknowledge that explaining this to someone who's not on FT (the VP approving the expense) could be challenging.
When travelling for a company work purpose dates often change. This is not discretionary personal travel. Time is money to a business.
