It seems like the cheap China Southern J fare via CAN is combinable with AC on the same ticket (see attachment to this post).

Anyway, if I were you I would just book China Southern, $3,500 YYZ-MEL in J with only one stop is an amazing fare and I'm sure your boss will appreciate you coming in under budget. 30,000 miles is not worth paying more than 50% extra.
