I think suite upgrades at US properties are rare, unless you are a frequent guest of that hotel or they have very low occupancy (i.e. they have pointsaver award rooms available for booking). I would say over the years, 90% of my suite upgrades have been at international properties.

The JW New Orleans is a small hotel, but it has a relatively nice lounge for a US property. I did not receive an upgrade during my last stay at the hotel, but it was still a pleasant stay.
