Sounds like while the purchase will earn 2x, it's the redemption/eraser that isn't seeing it as a travelcategory .

I bought it straight from hotel.com.
It did not earn 2X. It earned me 1X. It did not show up as a transaction that can be redeemed as a travel charge neither. I thought I made it clear.
Feel free to buy a random Hotel.com gift card yourself and test it out. For me it did not work. I did not bother calling CS since it's a gift card charge and I did not want to drawn much attention to it.
