FYI, my wife and I are flying ORD-LHR in a few months. Was looking to book the flight with miles, but wanted to get my favorite 767 seats in row 21. They were available for paid tix, but not for award.
Talked to American, they told me that you can NOT book them at time of booking award reservations, but you CAN choose them if available 24 in advance. I'm lowly Gold this year, BTW.
Didn't want to take the chance, so paid. Airfare was only $500 RT/pp, so good deal deal.

This. I've tried to "upgrade" seats on Saver awards (to MCE) that I've purchased for friends (so we can sit together when I've been in MCE thanks to status), and I was told that there's no way to do that on award tickets. There may have been some sort of misunderstanding on what was offered/expected.
