This is the only legacy Starwood property in close proximity to the beach. There is a JW Marriott. Check the Marriott forum for reviews of it's properties. I might also suggest the LA and Luxury Hotel forums.
Unless you specifically want to stay in Santa Monica or near the beach, consider staying at the SLS Beverly Hills or either W property. They are are in good locations for doing a lot of the fun stuff to do in LA.
