Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you have a NZ number? I was curious if the driver would call an overseas number if it came up.

From the article I linked below, it sounds like Uber is not banned from the Airport, but the drivers have to register (and pay) to pick up there. So the driver you had may not have been exactly truthful, but at least you were able to get there!
