Not sure about the frequency of the VA or QF shuttles - I remember waiting 45 minutes once for a QF transfer, so I'd be looking to take the train anyway. The likelihood that you'll miss the transfer because of flight delays is conceivable but unlikely on the first flight of the day (weather permitting). You'll arrive around 0730 and get to the International terminal maybe 45 minutes later.
There are many long haul flights arriving early morning in SYD
In the morning there are 100's of people coming off QF & other international flight for QF T3. QF airside bus are frequent.
Similar for VA, but will not have as many international passengers.
