Home from the hospital, doctor's note in hand, called UA tonight and was able to cancel the award tickets with redeposit, paid the redeposit fee, then went on the website and uploaded the doctor's note and have tracking numbers for all four canceled eTickets for the refunds of redeposit fees.

I think I got a reply within 3-4 days, and the refund appeared within another 1-2 days recently, albeit for a cash-paid flight change due to a funeral.
