However, I am flying Delta charges an extra 40k miles, for the leg to Cairns making the one way 150,000 miles at the lowest i see vs American charges the same 80,000 miles whether I want to go to Sydney or Cairns.
This is because the Delta leg isn't available at the saver level. Instead of pricing it all at the higher level that would be required for the DL flight, it prices it as two. Since partners are always saver level, this means you're booking a US-Australia high reward and an intra-Australia saver reward.
