You are a Starwood Platinum now. If the market you are saying in has a Starwood hotel you prefer (quality of hotel, location, etc) you can earn Marriott points while receiving Starwood Platinum benefits. You won't earn stay credit towards next year's status, but maybe Marriott will combine nights for status purposes next year.
