Budgeting can be Fun
Here are some more budget tips.
1. Do not be set on a destination.
2. Look at packages to your destination using Norwegian Air, WOW Air, Iceland Air. Sometimes its cheaper to book one way on WOW Air and fly back on Iceland Air or Norwegian Air.
3. Look at Cunard Cruises one way from New York. You can get an inside cabin for around $800 and then book a cheap flight back from London on Iceland Air and use their free stopover in Iceland and spend time there.
4. Eat locally. Go to a local supermarket and sign up for their discount card. Just give the address of your hotel if you need to provide one. Then find a nice square to picnic or picnic under a site like the Eiffel Tower at sunset.
5. If you see lots of locals patronizing street vendors then go and eat at a street vendor or find a restaurant tucked on a small alleyway near a church with one menu in one language with locals. Be sure there is no"We speak English sign". And then go inside and order things you would not normally order at home. Just have fun ordering beers, good food etc.
6. Stateside go to restaurants that have Happy Hour and sample the local brews . At brewpubs you can enjoy good appetizers for half off.
7. In Europe stand at the bar/Tapas bar Espresso bar as they charge you more to sit down.
8. Sign up for TMobiile Simple Choice which lets you roam in 140+Countries with Data, Texting included and calls just 20 cents a minute incoming or outgoing and free WiFi Calling.
9. Skip Public transportation in areas where there is Uber/Lyft and opt to split the ride with another person who is going in your general direction.
10. Pick up the latest guidebook and not an old one.
11.Rent a car from off airport. Even if you have to take Uber/Lyft or a taxi to the off site rental you can still end up saving more money this way.
12. Use Door Dash/Uber Food Delivery and Grocery Delivery services when you rent an apartment or condo with a kitchen. Enjoy a local dinner on your first night by ordering Door Dash and scheduling the food to arrive just after you have settled in. Nothing beats a nice hot meal the first night and last night. Just go to a supermarket and get a bottle of wine.
13.Do not pay the fees to assign seats before instead get to the airport early or better yet check in 24 hours before the flight to pick your seat gratis.
14. Attend music festivals, sporting events etc. Also if your driving along or walking along and you see a crowd stop and enjoy the moment you may meet new people and experience the local culture. If you see a Farmers Market or an Indoor market stop and check it out. Don't just drive by as you may find a good meal for less than you expected.
15. Always drink locally .If beer is the local drink drink beer, if wine is the drink of choice drink wine.
16. Purchase a Nokia Phone with Here Maps/Windows Map and use the Offline Maps instead of buying a Garmin and you can use this for walking too using the GPS and SIM Card.
17. Go to Meetup.com and look for a meetup in your local city. Enjoy a gourmet dinner and concert or Opera to a tour of the city . Setup your own Meetup and meet locals. Perhaps they will be lifelong friends or at least show you around the city for the cost of a lunch.
18. Go to Universities worldwide and eat at the MENSA(A cafeteria) They don't check your ID and you can eat good on the cheap.
19. Stay at a hotel near the airport he night before and return the car at the car rental agency the day before the flight and have a staffmember take you from the car rental agency back to the hotel.
20. Buy Trailmix from Costco along with plates and plastic silverware as well as bring plastic water bottles, plastic wine glasses, napkins etc. You never know when you'll want an impromptu picnic even on the dashboard of your card.
21. Read Rick Steves and Google the YouTube Video Rick Steves Travel Tips his tips can be used anywhere.
22. Enjoy nightlife on the cheap by heading to the locals area where nightclubs are cheaper, better bars and Pubs etc.
23. Read up on the Holidays and enjoy them like a local. Remember you are a temporary local not a temporary tourist.
24. Who says you can't practice your religion while abroad? Attend a Church, Synagogue or Mosque Service and you may be invited for some home hospitality. I was invited to a nice Jewish Sabbath Dinner(Shabbat) and Lunch after services as a Guest. It was so much fun being invited to a local's home.
25. When renting cars go to rentalcars.com for your research then call up Europecar , Avis etc direct and try to negotiate a deal.
26. Find out your long lost relatives and write them and they may invite you and even take you around.
27. Look for a local Pharmacy and they will be able to get you medications that normally are under prescription and they are open 24 hours. Sometimes a Doctor is at the Pharmacy and they can help you with your ailment for a lot less than a hospital.
28. Find a 7-11 and buy all your tolitries, snacks, drinks etc. Too many Americans overpack and are too afraid they will not find the same items at home. The world is getting smaller. I have found Dove Soap,Colgate Toothpaste, NVIEA Bodywash abroad. If I forgot something I will go to a 7-11 type store and buy it there plus it forces me to interact with the local people and practice their local language.
29. Walking is free just bring a good pair of shoes and walk the city. I love walking and the money I save on public transportation I will use it for a nice meal and a few drinks. You can take walking toors go to toursbylocals.com and enjoy a local guided tour.
30, Hire a private driver and split the cost if you can.
31. Eat Dinner at lunch time and stick to wine, cheese and desserts for Dinner time. Want that Gelato then eat it at dinner time. You will save money by making lunch your main meal.
32. Book a hotel with an included breakfast. If the breakfast is not included then skip the expensive hotel breakfast and go to a local bakery, cafe and enjoy breakfast style.
33. Google" Art Gallery Receptions+your city" and you will find art gallery openings with good art free food and good wine etc.
34. Google" 5 Star Yelp Italian Restaurants or Vegetarian Restaurants Near Me or in Rome" You can do this for TripAdvisor too you can do this for hotels or any service you need from car repair to rental cars and it will show you all the 5 star reviews. Go ahead and try it out. I have done this and have not been disappointed and it has saved me time and money weeding out the bad reviews.
35. Eat locally and in season. If artichokes are in season eat it.
36. Call ahead for a reservation or use OpenTable to avoid wasting precious touring time.
37. Wait to exchange all money when you arrive. Do this at a bank that is affiliated with your Bank. for instance Bank of America has a network of banks where they waive the fee. Use the ATM to exchange money or do it inside the banks.
38. Get a Capital One Card without a foreign exchange fee and ask them to charge you at the local rate as opposed to the Dynamic Rate. If you charge in dollars you can end up paying more.
39. If your a member of Costco your membership will work in London or wherever there is a Costco.
40. Use Groupon/Living Social/Travel Zoo to find good deals on tour packages, local restaurants(remember to tip if that is the custom before the discount)
41. Take last minute tour packages using Groupon/Living Social Travel Zoo. Be sure your passport is valid for 6 months but some countries allows 3 months but its safer to have more time so you can take off at a moments notice.
42. Download Art Gallery Tours to your phone rather than paying to rent the audio guide.
43. Buy convertible pants/shorts that convert with a zipper it works if your going to tour a church or dinner.
44. Pack non wrinkle shirts and easy to clean shirts and clean them in the hotel sink and let them dry. Find out a laundromat for locals as the primary way to wash clothes.
45. Pack old clothes and leave them behind or throw them away this is an excuse to buy that splurge Italian shirt you want or different clothes than you are used to, Just bring the US size conversion to the local equivalent . Buy new shoes in Europe etc.
I hope you enjoy my tips and I would be happy to add more. Please give me your feedback and what tips you liked the most. Thanks and Happy Travels!!
