I agree with the OP insofar as 1) I personally dislike strongly hopped, high ABV beers, and 2) this style of beer is currently all the rage in the US, where it is crowding out other styles of beer. There are other beers out there, though. At bars and restaurants that serve craft beers I'm almost always able to find something that's not a punch-you-in-the-mouth IPA.
At my favorite local craft bar, there are 65 taps. On average, 10 of those are IPA or double IPA. I usually have 5-10 porters and stouts to choose from and that's where I usually start. I like hops but there are a lot of good beers out there that aren't IPA.
