There are so many trains going from ZRH to the main station (and many of them which stop on the higher level platforms which would be a short easy stroll away) - why the need for such a tight connection?

Yes, I would consider allowing more time for the transfer as you had suggested.
I also noted since my OP that trains from the airport to main station is very frequent. I could take an earlier train to Zurich main station.
