Incredibly annoying that this is all being applied retrospectively!
As of this past Monday, at least, there has been no change to AA's policy for thru-checking bags or protecting in the event of misconnects.

If I recall correctly, when AA announced that they were going to stop thru-checking baggage to non-oneworld airlines on separate tickets a few years ago, it only applied for tickets issued on or after the date the announcement was made.
