IAH is of course the only thing UA has in the entire south. I dunno maybe that alone makes it a "not a bad hub" ? But where does it say they have to have a southern presence beyond a focus city ?
Why not pick up in Memphis or Nashville where Delta/Northwest & AA respectively left off ? Sure minimum O/D but excellent geography for hubbing/connecting traffic into the southeast and the Caribbean and Latin America.
