it makes no sense to close a hub that is at least marginally profitable.
CLE they had to close to get rid of all that -145 flying because of the pilot shortage.
If there are individual routes that are problematic, they can and should deal with them, but the wholesale cutting of a hub leads to competitors coming in and cherry picking the juiciest routes.
Even CLE, a lot of new service moved in to serve the local traffic on major routes. LAX isn't a fortress hub, and building one doesn't really seem like a possibility given the scale of the airport and the level of heavy competition there. But it certainly doesn't seem like a retreat is in order.
