Do the resorts specifically state that the "service fee" goes to the workers? Many times in the US the "service fee" doesn't go to the workers (at least in the restaurant biz ie catering) but many people who see that assume it does.
To find tipping people "sickening" I feel is a bit extreme. I can see both sides of the argument. Just depends on the culture you grew up in and also the culture you're visiting.
Generic Service Fees, Resort Fee and Facility Fees go straight to the organization. Having worked at a few large resort type facilities the money goes to the bottom line. It does not trickle down unless it is specific to a service Room Service or other food service. Even then, the company may take a "vig."
So that said, I also believe in tipping housekeeping.
