Maybe it qualifies... what was the first flight on the itinerary? If it was JNB-HKG or JNB-SYD then you are not backtracking through Europe/Middle East and so it does not qualify as an example of AA allowing backtracking with inter-zone segments. Also, if you purchased your ticket under the post April-2016 rules then it does not qualify, because the new rules impose no restrictions on inter-zone flights (although
thois has told us AA is now misinterpreting those new rules - see post #274 upthread)
However if your first flight was JNB-DOH then it does qualify as an example, because I expect that AA checked the itinerary when it reissued the ticket for you. If this is the case, then well done^
(And for completeness, if your first flight was JNB-LHR, then your ticket wasn't valid in the first place!)
