Date of arrival and departure is the dates of your visa validity.
For example: if you're applying for a 3 years visa starting August 1, 2016. The date of arrival and departure should read August 1, 2016 - July 31, 2019. For a 1 year visa it should be August 1, 2016 - July 31, 2017. Some people would confused that as being the actual dates of the days you will be in Russia.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I can absolutely +1 the visa validity tip you provide above.

I had always indicated the arrival and departure dates of my first planned trip into Russia for which I was applying for a visa. Only on the most recent application (my fourth), did the ILS clerk explain that the dates should match the entire visa validity.

Great tip ^
