My son loves the toys that expand in water. You can get sponge animals/ vehicles in gelatin capsules where the gelatin dissolves and the creature grows. Also, the kind that look like plastic animals but slowly grow. We pass time by filling sippy cups with warm water from the bathroom and watching the creatures. He then has new playthings as well, and they take up very little room.
