AA had a recent schedule update this past weekend that resulted on 2 of my trips having some significant changes, the biggest one a 777 ORD-DFW is now a MD80, and a LAX-MIA in layflat 767 is now 738 along with schedule changes. There has not been an email warning from AA at all, aside from the one yesterday about changes to AAdvantage, however, I did get notifications from AW on this and I've already contacted AA to make proper changes. One thing I've learn over the years is that you need to be proactive with your reservations, do not leave it to faith or others. Hence my AW account to keep track of notifications, and also expert flyer to alert me on aircraft changes.
I second this, also i recommend using Trip Case, as it pulls directly from Sabre to check on AA reservations. I have found the notifications to be instantaneous. I had a delayed flight, and while i dont remember if i checked AA app or website, the Trip Case app was bombarding me with notifications on change of schedules every 20 mins or so... when they pushed forward the departure time. I'm not sure as i haven't used AW for notifications, but Trip Case with AA has been really handy.
