Well, that's not entirely true since I think AC would welcome the opportunity to sell an LMU even at the gate, but I suspect no gate agent would entertain such a mess when their primary concern is getting the flight pushed back on time.
I asked about one at the gate once before boarding had begun, and the agent kind of laughed and said "we don't SELL upgrades".
This was before I had status or was on FT, but about a month after I had bought my first LMU.
