There is a little bit of a lesson here, which is that, whatever clothes/material you need on the day of arrival you should probably have in your carry on luggage. That said, airlines are usually pretty good in paying out in these instances, as are travel insurance providers, subject to submission of receipts and the general rule that you should buy things that you wouldn't expect to have reimbursed. This typically applies only to the destination, rather than at the final return.
