I'll offer a slight variation, because I hate taking sleeping pills, I don't feel well rested afterward.

Get up really early (whatever that is for you) the day of the flight. As others have said, have a decent meal at the airport. Hopefully you'll be getting tired naturally shortly after takeoff, and can sleep through the flight.
