As an American tourist, if you have the ability and interest to try and speak, even a little bit of french, you'll certainly experience the warmest hospitality and appreciation from the people of Quebec that you could imagine. NeverAtHome's comments about Quebecers and Montreal residents are correct, but if you can attempt even basic french, your visit will undoubtably be enjoyable.
