I am more blown away that there's no F to/from:
Tokyo (except for one HND flight -- does JL even have an F flight...I used to enjoy 6pm NRT-HKG in F).
SYD/MEL???
Anyone have any perspectives on whats going on that's causing this?
CX has two flights to HND with F (542-548), generally one 744 and one 77W. Business pax fly to HND not NRT, so no point having a plane with F to NRT. But there is not much demand for F, so fares are just a bit higher than the regular J fare.
There are two types of planes flying F regionally. The old 744s which do not fly LH anymore and the occasional LH 777 given that their schedule is a night flight so available during day. Given the excellent quality of the new J product (and corporate cost-cutting), the LH demand for F has been reduced, so there are less ac with F and therefore less ac available for regional flights with F.
And as CXFlyerBoy mentioned, the LH frames can more easily be sent to nearby destinations as destinations with a long regional flight make it more uncertain in case of delay.
