Not necessarily. The tool is fine giving you access to First as a D fared ticket. Problem is...AA sells A as both revenue and domestic upgrade space. It is well known that the HNL flights have A being zeroed out to avoid the upgrades domestically.
I'm willing to bet that A has no space on the date you are wanting to travel. Check EF to see what the A bucket says....
