Second the request for a decent local paper instead of USAToday (aka the McPaper)

Essentials: iron and ironing board, coffeemaker, mending kit (one came in very handy the morning of a job interview when I had to sew on a cuff button!). Sufficient electrical outlets near the Internet connection. Half the time I end up sitting on my bed with my laptop because that's the only place with a phone line and electrical outlets in close proximity.

I've encountered a few CD players, which are nice- unfortunately I didn't know ahead of time so didn't bring any of my CDs.
