As far as I can see they only fill the EC seats when the normal seats are filled. I often have an empty seat next to me. I think four times last year my seat was changed and I was moved forward of the curtain on boarding.
I'.m not sure why you would fly without using your status, though priority boarding might help with finding a place for your carry on
