From my experience in most cases they will let you go later, although maybe not a few days. If you want to go the next day you probably can negotiate it. Once you get bumped many rules go out the window. For example, you sometimes can negotiate returning into another city (not LAX instead of DTW), but perhaps Chicago or Grand Rapids. You should definitely ask and often you will receive.
