To reduce the chance of a schedule change which frustrates those same customers and ultimately costs the company more money. Or just because they hate customers, but that's probably not the case, right?

Also, if the fare is going to be the same anyways why give the company money now, 9 months in advance. May as well sit on it rather than advancing it to someone else.
