I got this exact same impression. Flying mostly AA it seemed almost useless to me. Although I have an Admirals Club membership now, I'm going to go for a Quantas Club membership soon when I have to renew. Access not only to the Quantas lounges (which I never go to except the new LAX AC/QC), but also the AA and US lounges via reciprocal agreement, all for less than the price of just the Admirals Club membership.
