Overall I love this new itinerary and will purchase it in the future. Home base is IAD so as another poster comments, it will actually be a longer trip (arriving SIN about 7 hours later) going IAD-SFO-SIN rather than IAD-NRT-SIN. That said…..
I currently own an itinerary in August IAD-NRT-SIN and then SIN-NRT-IAD. I have applied GPU and it is confirmed for IAD-NRT and NRT-IAD, pending for the shorter legs.
I've just been on the phone with a 1K agent for quite some time. The news was actually new to her; I guess the release is that new. Bottom line is that they have noted in the system, if I choose to make a change, that they will treat this as a schedule change, and will make a straight exchange to the new itin. I maintain the upgrade outbound, and they would (if i want a confirmed upgrade) make me change my return flights by one day.
Further…. so far I've received no note about the change nor is their a change noted in "my itineraries" on UAL.com. If i choose to just keep what I've purchased, there would be no problem simply keeping what I already own IAD-SIN, upgraded via GPU. BUT…. now the connection to SIN will be operated by ANA, which despite the language of "partnership" are lousy partners. They will NOT honor any upgrade request…… so i wouldn't even have the possibility (other than purchasing a business class seat outright) of anything other than regular coach 7 more hours NRT-SIN. I don't want to do that.
And yes, i see in the press release the pending government approval language. Even with that, if you try to buy a SFO-SIN ticket right now to travel in June or later, you can do it.
SO……….. I'm trying to decide what to do. (1) Nothing at all for the time being is one option. (2) Another is to make the change they're offering me at no additional dollar cost, get to SIN at 6:45 a.m. instead of the prior midnight and also have to leave for home a day earlier than currently planned (because they cannot and will not confirm the upgrade for the day i'd prefer to travel, and they say that they cannot "force" the system to confirm the upgrade.
Given the newness of all of this…… what would you do right now? Thanks for taking the time to think about it.
